The best time to trek Agasthyarkoodam is during the Forest Department’s seasonal window, which runs for about a month from around mid-January into February. This is the cooler, drier part of the year, and it is the period when the department opens the trail for its controlled trek.
The seasonal window
The Forest Department’s own season is tied to the festival calendar in many years. It typically begins around the Makara Vilakku period in mid-January and runs into February. Next season’s dates are announced by the Forest Department, usually in the first half of January.
KeralaTrekking also runs guided batches outside that window. See guided batches for current dates.
Why January and February work
- Drier trail. Wet rock makes the final granite climb much harder and riskier. The dry window keeps the rope section manageable.
- Cooler walking. Long climbs in forest and grassland are easier in cool weather.
- Clearer views. Dry-season visibility is better from the open ridges and the summit.
- Official access. This is when the Forest Department’s regular programme runs.
Mornings, nights and layers
Expect cold, early starts on the summit day and a chilly night at Athirumala after the long first day. Pack a warm layer for camp and a light rain jacket in case of mist or a passing shower. See the packing list.
Weekdays or weekends?
Weekend dates and public-holiday dates sell out first. If your schedule is flexible, a weekday batch gives you better odds. Booking opens on a strict schedule, so being ready at the opening time matters more than the exact day.
What about dates outside the window?
Access outside the official season depends entirely on what the Forest Department allows for that specific batch. Conditions can also be harder, especially on wet rock. If you are looking at dates outside January to February, such as our November and December batches, ask us what is currently open and how the permit is arranged before you plan travel or book transport.
Simple planning timeline
- Now to December: build fitness, sort your fitness certificate and ID copies, and decide a date window.
- Early January: watch for the Forest Department announcement and the booking time.
- Booking day: be online a few minutes early with every participant’s details ready.
- Two weeks before: finalise gear, travel to Thiruvananthapuram and the stay near the start.
