Can a first-time trekker do Agasthyarkoodam? The honest answer is yes, if you are fit, prepare properly and go with a group. But it is not an easy first trek, and it is better to know that now than at kilometre 15.

What first-timers underestimate

  • The distance. 50+ km over three days is a lot more than most beginners have ever walked, and day one alone is around 20 km. KeralaTrekking’s own itinerary says this trek is not recommended for complete beginners.
  • The downhill. The walk out is long and hard on knees. Most people train uphill and forget the descent.
  • The rope section. The final climb is steep granite with fixed ropes. It is manageable for fit, calm trekkers, but it is not a place to panic.
  • The paperwork. Permits go fast, and you must carry the right documents and a fitness certificate.

Are you ready? A quick self-check

  • You can walk 3 to 4 hours with a loaded backpack without feeling wrecked.
  • You have done at least two or three day treks with real climbs.
  • You are comfortable on steep ground with your hands free.
  • You can follow instructions from guides without argument, even when tired.

If most of those are a no, build up first. A few months of consistent training and a couple of long day treks change the experience entirely.

How to prepare in 8 weeks

  1. Walk or run three to four times a week and add stairs or hills once a week.
  2. Add leg strength twice a week: squats, lunges, step-ups and calf raises.
  3. Do one long loaded-pack walk every weekend and increase the time gradually.
  4. Practise the downhill on stairs and slopes.
  5. Break in your shoes, and test your socks and pack on a long walk.

The full plan is on difficulty and fitness.

Why going with a group helps

On a hard trek, a group gives you pacing, motivation and safety in numbers. A guided batch also takes the admin off your plate: you know what documents to bring, where to report and what to carry. You still have to do the walking, but you do not have to figure out everything else alone.

Mindset matters

Many first-timers reach the top because they kept moving at a steady pace, not because they were the fastest. Eat on schedule, drink often, rest briefly and keep your stride short on the way down. If your body says stop, tell your guide early.

Next steps: check the packing list and how permits work.
