Women can trek Agasthyarkoodam, and many do every season. That was not always true. For years the peak, associated with Sage Agastya, was open only to men. Here is what changed, and what women trekkers should know before they plan.
What changed
A Kerala High Court order removed the restriction on women, and from the 2019 season women have been able to register for the trek like anyone else. Since then, women of many ages and backgrounds have reached the summit, and the trek has become a favourite among women trekkers from across the country.
Eligibility in short
- Women book the same way as everyone else, as registered applicants on the official portal.
- The same documents apply: valid photo ID and a fitness certificate.
- Minimum age has been 14 in recent seasons. Confirm the current rule.
- Foreign nationals, men or women, are not permitted on this trek.
Practical points for women trekkers
- Train for the distance, not the speed. The trek rewards steady endurance. Build up long walks with a loaded pack.
- Pack personal items carefully, including anything you need for the days on the trail, repacked without plastic.
- Ask your organiser about the group. Knowing the size, the guides and the plan beforehand helps you feel settled.
- Tell the group leader about any health concern early, so pacing and support can be arranged.
- Trek with confidence in a group. You do not have to be the fastest to belong on this mountain.
Solo women and women-only groups
Many women join as solo trekkers or in small friend groups. If you want to know who else is in your batch, ask us about the batch you are considering before you confirm.
Respect on the mountain
The summit idol is a place of worship, and the area is of deep significance to local communities. Follow the guides’ lead, keep to the rules, and leave the place as you found it. Rules such as the plastic ban and the ban on ritual offerings apply to everyone.
