Two of Kerala’s best-known mountain treks sit at opposite ends of the state and offer very different experiences. Meesapulimala, near Munnar, is the higher peak but a shorter walk. Agasthyarkoodam, in the far south, is lower but a much longer, forest-heavy trek with a rope climb at the end. If you are choosing between them, here is how they compare.

Choose Agasthyarkoodam if
- You want a true multi-day expedition with a night at a forest camp.
- You enjoy long, steady walking and can train for 50+ km over three days.
- The rope climb and the sense of a protected, restricted mountain appeal to you.
- You can plan around the official season in January and February.
Choose Meesapulimala if
- You want a high-altitude summit without several days of walking.
- You prefer open ridges and big views over long forest approaches.
- You have only a day or two to spare.
- You are building up to a harder trek and want a strong but shorter outing first.
Which is harder?
They are hard in different ways. Agasthyarkoodam asks for endurance over distance and days. Meesapulimala asks for effort at altitude over fewer hours. For most first-timers, Meesapulimala is the more approachable of the two, and Agasthyarkoodam is a better second or third big trek after you have a few long days behind you.
Doing both
Many trekkers do both across a year. A sensible order is Meesapulimala first, then a few long weekend treks, then Agasthyarkoodam during its season. You can read the Meesapulimala guide at meesapulimalatrekking.com.
